A chart of accounts is a list of all the external and internal accounts that a church has in the accounting software. These include bank accounts, investment accounts, loans, as well as office expenses, missions giving income, etc. All of the major financial reports (Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss Statement, Statement of Cash Flow) get information from the chart of accounts, so having a robust list is important.
